Champions League Final 1999
Manchester United 2 Bayern Munich 1
Manchester United won the English Premier League and the FA Cup in 1999 and the addition of the Champions League would make it an impressive treble. Manchester United reached the final held during May 1999 at Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium. In the final Manchester United met the German champions Bayern Munich. The match got off to a poor start for Manchester United when after just six minutes they found themselves a goal down, the result of a Mario Basler free kick awarded for a foul on the edge of the box by Ronny Johnsen. Manchester United rallied and enjoyed the lion's share of the possession for the remainder of the first half but failed to score against the well organised Bayern Munich defence.
Manchester United came under pressure from a resurgent Bayern Munich side in the second half when both teams created chances. The Germans appeared to have the upperhand over Manchester United forcing Sir Alex Ferguson to bring Teddy Sheringham on for Jesper Blomqvist in an attempt to redress the balance. Bayern Munich continued to force the play and with ten minutes to go Ferguson made a second substitution, introducing Solskjaer in place of Andy Cole. Both Sheringham and Solskjaer had attempts on the Bayern Munich goal but to no avail and Manchester United found themselves staring defeat in the face as the 90 minutes passed.
at the end of normal time the fourth official indicated three additional minutes and Manchester United's David Beckham stepped up to take a corner. Beckham's corner found Dwight Yorke, then Ryan Giggs, whose miskick found Teddy Sheringham whose miskick inturn found the back of the net and Manchester United were level. All thoughts were now on extra time when Manchester United won a second 'injury time' corner, David Beckham once again stepped up. This time Beckham found Teddy Sheringham who headed the ball goalward towards Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who tapped the ball into the net to give Manchester United a 2-1 lead and at the same time complete the most incredible three minutes in Champions League history. The whistle blew as the German team restarted and the name of Manchester United was back on the trophy after a thirty one year absence.
