UEFA Champions League UEFA Champions League

UEFA Champions League

the UEFA Champions League is an annual football competition contested between Europe's most successful clubs, created in 1992 the Champions League evolved from the European Champion Clubs' Cup, or European Cup for short. The original European Cup began back in 1955 and was initially only open to the winners of Europe's domestic leagues, however, in 1997 UEFA restructured the Champions League to include some European league's runners up too. This restructure of the Champions League was based on a coefficient ranking list where the runners up in Europe's major domestic leagues (English Premier League, Spanish La Liga etc) would be included over the winners of the minor leagues (Cyprus, Malta etc).

In the Champions League ranking list football associations ranked 1 to 3 enter the top 4 teams in their leagues, 4 to 6 enter the top 3 teams, 7 to 15 enter their top 2 teams and associations ranked 16 or less enter their winning team only. Their are currently a number of stages to the Champions League beginning with three qualification rounds between those winning teams from the lowest ranked football associations and the runners up and third and fourth placed teams from the higher ranked associations. The 16 successful teams from the qualifying rounds then join 16 seeded winners and runners up from the major European leagues in the Champions League group stage, the 8 group winners and 8 group runners up then go forward to the two leg knockout stage. The next three stages of the Champions League, the quarter finals, semi finals and final then follow.
