Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel - (1883 - 1971) French fashion designer Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel was born in Maine-et-loire, France.  The mother of "Coco" Chanel died in 1895 and she was sent to an orphanage where she learned to be a seamstress.  At 18 years old "Coco" Chanel worked for a local tailor where she met a lover who helped her to open her own millinery shop in 1910, then in 1915 she opened a couture house. In 1939 war broke out and "Coco" Chanel closed her shops believing fashion was inappropriate at the time of war, she also lived in the Hotel Ritz in Paris and continued to do so for the next 30 years. "Coco" Chanel then moved to Switzerland before returning to Paris and the fashion industry in 1957. "Coco" Chanel died in Paris in 1971 aged 87 and to this day Chanel remains one of the largest design houses in the world.
