After winning a contest for his asymetrical cocktail dress in 1954 Yves Saint Laurent worked for Christian Dior. In 1962 Yves Saint Laurent opened his own fashion house then later in 1966 Rive Gauche boutiques were established for women and for men in 1974. Yves Saint Laurent's high standards of classic cut and tailoring always lead to standing ovations after each collection launch. Yves Saint Laurent retired in 2002 and became more and more reclusive until his death from the effects of brain cancer on 1st June 2008.
