England Cricket Team

The England cricket team dates back as far as 1739 when an 'All-England XI' played against the county cricket team of Kent.  The England Cricket team, which represents England and Wales, was governed by the MCC (Marylbone Cricket Club) from 1903 to 1996 until the beginning of 1997 when this responsibility was transferred to the ECB (the England and Wales Cricket Board)

In 1877 the England Cricket team and Australian Cricket team were the first national teams to be granted Test status.  Later in 1909 the England Cricket team gained full membership to the ICC (the International Cricket Council).  England were the first team to take part in a One Day International and a Twenty20 match, on both occasions against Australia, the first in 1971 and the second more recently in 2005.

The Cricket World Cup competition began in 1975 and takes place every 4 years, to date England have not won the competition achieving only runners up status on 3 ocassions.  One of the fiercest rivalries in sport can be found in international Cricket, between England and Australia as they compete for “the Ashes”, this competition began back in 1881 and for many years featured what were the world’s top two cricketing nations until the emergence of the West Indies in the 60’s.
