England team player profile - Peter Crouch

Peter Crouch was born on 30th January 1981 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, as a young child Peter Crouch lived for some time in London and Singapore and spent his teenage years at Drayton Manor High School in Hanwell.  It was Tottenham Hotspur who gave Peter Crouch his first professional contract in 1998, although he never made a first team appearance and was subsequently sold to Queens Park Rangers in July 2000. Peter Crouch made 42 appearanmces and scored 10 goals for QPR but they were relegated to League one, the third tier of English football, and were forced to sell their most valuable players. In 2001 Portsmouth football club came in for Peter Crouch and paid £1.25 million for him, he rewarded them with 18 goals in 37 league appearances.

Peter Crouch's value was increasing all the time and in early 2002 Aston Villa bought him from Portsmouth for £5 million. He scored on his home debut for Villa but by his second season he found himself off form, out of the first team and on loan to Norwich City. The Norwich fans took Peter Crouch to their hearts and he proved to be an important player for them during his three months at the club.  He scored 4 goals in 15 appearances for Norwich and helped them win the old First Division (now renamed the Championship). After a brief return to Aston Villa Peter Crouch was sold in 2004 to another Premiership side Southampton, for just £2 million.

It was during his time at Southampton that he received his first England call up, but, despite scoring 16 goals in 33 appearances at club level and spearheading some impressive results Southampton were relegated and Peter Crouch's future became uncertain. The uncertainty was shortlived and on 19th July 2005 Liverpool FC unveiled their new £7 million signing Peter Crouch.

Peter Crouch had a difficult start at Liverpool and found himself under immense pressure due to his lack of goals, he failed to score in his first 19 appearances over a four month period. His goal drought came to an end in December 2005 since when he became part of the 2006 FA Cup winning team and ended the 2006/07 as Liverpool's top scorer.  The rotation system, employed by Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, was a constant frustration for players like Peter Crouch, it left them unable to feature consistently in the first team, and, on 11th July 2008 Peter Crouch moved from Liverpool  FC to south coast Premier League side Portsmouth for a fee of £9million.
