At the beginning of the 70's Liverpool Football Club were yet to taste success in European football, however, by 1976 the name 'Liverpool Football Club' had been etched on the UEFA Cup, not once but twice, winning in 1973 & 1976.  The next season Liverpool FC aimed to build on their successes and step up to the challenge of winning the European Cup.  The following season Liverpool FC battled their way to the European Cup final and in May 1977 took to the field in Italy's capital Rome, where they came up against the German side Borussia Monchengladbach.

Liverpool FC started well and were justly rewarded in the 28th minute when Steve Heighway set up Terry McDermott for Liverpool's first. Liverpool continued to dominate and went into half time with their one nil lead intact.  Liverpool FC started the second half strongly but paid dearly for a poor back pass that led to the German's equaliser, scored by Simonsen.  Merseyside nerves were eased somewhat in the 65th minute when Tommy Smith headed in Liverpool's second from a Steve Heighway corner, Liverpool then put the game beyond the German's reach in the final minutes when Phil Neal converted a penalty, given for a foul on striker Kevin Keegan.

The win was not only poignant as the first time Liverpool had won the cup but it was also the last time Kevin Keegan wore Liverpool's number 7 shirt, prior to the end of the 76/77 season Keegan had agreed to join SV Hamburg.
