The match itself was a disappointing, unremarkable affair which Liverpool FC won as a result of a second half Kenny Dalglish goal. The previous season Liverpool FC had won the European Cup for the first time in their history and this second win put Liverpool FC into the record books as the first English side to win the European Cup twice. Liverpool FC's captain on the day, the late Emlyn Hughes, became the first English captain to lift the European Cup twice, a record that has not been equalled to this day.
