Liverpool sweatshirt Liverpool sweatshirts European Cup Final 1981 Liverpool Football Club 1 Real Madrid 0 Liverpool Football Club fought their way to yet another European Cup final at the end of the 1980/81 season. For Liverpool Football Club this was the third final they had reached in the last five, the two previous ocassions they had won the cup. The final was held at the end of May 1981 and was between Real Madrid and Liverpool FC. The Spanish giants Real Madrid had won the cup six times, to Liverpool's two, and this was their ninth appearance in the final. Much like Liverpool's previous final in 1978, the match was a disappointing spectacle with Real Madrid the stronger side overall during the first half. Liverpool fought back in the second half and were rewarded eight minutes before the end of full time when Alan Kennedy received a Ray Kennedy throw in and scored from a tight angle. The game finished 1-0 to Liverpool, despite Graeme Souness forcing a great save out of Madrid's keeper Agustin in the final frenetic minutes, and Phil Thompson lifted the trophy for Liverpool's third European Cup win.
