European Cup Final 1984

in 1984 Liverpool Football Club were steered to their fifth European Cup final by Liverpool FC manager Joe Fagan. The final between Liverpool Football Club and AS Roma coincidentally took place at Roma's home ground, the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Liverpool FC had won their first European Cup in the Stadio Olimpico seven years earlier in 1977 beating Borussia Monchengladbach.  The odds seemed to be against Liverpool FC, playing Roma in Rome, but the team were relaxed coming into the match and aimed to initially silence the crowd. Their plan worked and following a dominant start Phil Neal tapped in Liverpool FC's first after just 14 minutes. Liverpool FC's early goal spurred Roma into action and they heaped on the pressure for the rest of the half, their reward was a headed equaliser from Pruzzo just before the interval. Liverpool FC were unable to gain any further advantage throughout the second half and extra time and the game finished 1-1. 

Penalties followed and Liverpool FC got off to the worst possible start when Steve Nicol sent the first spot kick over the bar.  Liverpool FC were back on level terms when Conti missed Roma's second. The Penalty kick score stood at 3-2 to Liverpool FC when Graziana stepped up to take his penalty.  Liverpool FC keeper Bruce Grobbelaar performed his infamous 'spaghetti legs' routine and Graziana duly lost concentration and fired his kick over the bar giving Alan Kennedy the opportunity to seal the win for Liverpool FC. Kennedy converted his kick and Liverpool FC celebrated their fourth European Cup win and completed their season's treble having already won both the English League and League Cup in what was Fagan's first year in charge.
