the history of the sweatshirt
sweatshirt [swet-shurt] - a loose, long-sleeved, collarless pullover of soft, absorbent fabric, as cotton jersey, with close-fitting or elastic cuffs and sometimes a drawstring at the waist, commonly worn during athletic activity for warmth or to induce sweating. source www.dictionary.com
the sweatshirt's creation was mapped out to an extent when in 1919 American brothers, Abe and Bill Feinbloom founded the 'Knickerbocker Knitting Company', now known as Champion products, as it was they who were reportedly responsible for the birth of the sweatshirt some years later. During the 1920's they patented a process to put raised letters on clothing and began manufacturing athletic wear which ultimately led to the production of the sweatshirt. Once the initial sweatshirt had been created there followed a number of variations on the sweatshirt theme including the zip fronted hooded sweatshirt designed with American football players in mind.
in the 1960's it became fashionable to wear university names on sweatshirts and to this day these types of sweatshirt are still popular. The 1970's saw both the rise of slogans across sweatshirts and the introduction of the jogging suit where a matching sweatshirt and sweat pants were combined and used by people to jog in. During the same decade it became fashionable to wear other items of clothing manufactured using sweatshirt material.
today the klever kloggs clothing brand has evolved the sweatshirt theme and created a range of cool, multi-functional, streetwear sweatshirts each featuring the name of a popular English city.
