Liverpool Football Club were in the League Cup final once again in 2003 when they were aiming to make it the seventh time they had won the cup. Wembley stadium was still under construction so the final between Liverpool FC and Manchester United was staged at Cardiff's Millennium stadium. Although Liverpool FC started the match tentatively they went on to effectively cancel out United's threat, with noteworthy performances from Liverpool FC keeper Jerzy Dudek and midfielder Steven Gerrard. As the first half came to a close it was Gerrard who opened the scoring for Liverpool FC with a 30 yard attempt, on 39 minutes, that flew high into the United net following a wicked deflection off of David Beckham's rasied leg.
Liverpool FC's Dudek continued finding his top form with crucial saves from attempts by Ruud Van Nistlelrooy, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. Liverpool FC's first goal seemed to unnerve some of United's players who inturn made sloppy mistakes. The second half was much of the same and, although neither side looked entirely convincing, Liverpool FC's name was firmly on the trophy by the 86th minute when Michael Owen scored Liverpool FC's second.
