Liverpool FC player profile - Dirk Kuyt

Liverpool FC's Dirk Kuyt was born on 22nd July 1980 in the fishing village of Katwijk aan Zee in the Netherlands. Dirk Kuyt's talent for football became evident very early in his childhood when at 5 years old he joined Quick Boys a local amateur team. Dirk Kuyt remained with the Quick Boys until he was 18 years old and playing for the first team.  It was during this time that he came to the attention of FC Ultrecht the Dutch premier league (Eridivisie) club who signed him in the summer of 1998.

Dirk Kuyt made an immediate impression at FC Ultrecht becoming a first choice winger soon after joining and by the end of his first (98/99) season he had scored 6 goals in 30 appearrances. Over the following three seasons Dirk Kuyt chalked up a further 114 appearances and 37 goals, then at the start of the 02/03 season Foeke Booy became manager of Ultrecht. Booy switched Dirk Kuyt from winger to striker and the impact was instant as his goal tally in 40 appearances that season came to 23, one of which he scored in the final of the Dutch Cup when Ultrecht beat Feyenoord 4-1. At the end of the season Dirk Kuyt was bought by Feyenoord for 1 million Euros.

Dirk Kuyt hit the ground running at Feyenoord scoring 20 goals in his first season and quickly becoming popular with the fans. The following season saw Dirk Kuyt achieve some career milestones, in September 2004 he debuted for Marco Van Basten's Dutch national team in a match against Liechtenstein and he also become the top scorer in the Dutch premier league with 29 goals. The next milestone in Dirk Kuyt's career came in the 05/06 season when he was given the captaincy of Feyenoord, he then took part in his first World Cup Finals with the Holland squad at Germany 2006. During the finals Dirk Kuyt played in two of the first round matches and again in the round of 16 tie where Holland were knocked out by Portugal.

During the summer of 2006 Dirk Kuyt was linked with a move to a number of English Premier League clubs and on 18th August he was unveiled as a new signing by Liverpool FC. Less than two weeks later on 26th August 2006 Dirk Kuyt made his Liverpool FC debut as a substitute against West Ham, his first goal for the club came on 20th September 2006 in a match against Newcastle United. By the end of his first (06/07) season with Liverpool FC Dirk Kuyt had scored 14 goals in 48 appearances and helped the reds get to the final of the Champions League where they were beaten 2-1 by AC Milan. Dirk Kuyt played in his first European Championships for Holland at Euro 2008 held in Austria and Switzerland, he was an integral part of the Dutch team which reached the Quarter Finals where they eventually lost 3-1 to Russia.
