the city of Liverpool, England

the city of Liverpool is situated on the banks of the River Mersey in the North West of England where for centuries trade and the growth in population were slow.  It was during the 18th century that Britain's first wet dock was built in Liverpool and with it came a meteoric rise in wealth and status.  By the end of the 19th century Liverpool had become a thriving city with 40% of the world's trade passing through it.

in the middle of the 19th century, as a result of the great famine, around 25% of the population of Liverpool were Irish migrants, then towards the end of the century the University of Liverpool was established.  The second world war brought a prolonged air raid campaign which resulted in much destruction and extensive loss of life.  A significant rebuilding programme followed the war and included large housing estates and the largest dock project in Britain, the seaforth dock.  The population of Liverpool today numbers just underr 500,000, those actually born there are referred to as either Liverpudlians or more affectionately “scousers”.
