former Manchester United player profile - Ben Foster
Benjamin Anthony "Ben" Foster, more widely known as Ben Foster Manchester United and England goalkeeper, was born on 03 April 1983 in Leamington Spa, England. Ben Foster began his footballing career in 2000 at Racing Club Warwick where he remained until 25 April 2001 when he signed for Stoke City. During his time on the books at Stoke City Ben Foster gained much of his playing experience from loan spells at a number of clubs including Stafford Rangers, Tiverton Town, Kidderminster Harriers, Bristol City and Wrexham.
Ben Foster's time at Wrexham proved to be a lot more fruitful then he may have expected as it was whilst there that he was spotted by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who was watching his son Darren Ferguson at the time. Stoke City and Manchester United came to an agreement over the transfer of Ben Foster and on 19 July 2005 the move was completed. On 01 August 2005 Ben Foster once again found himself out on loan, this time to Watford where manager Aidy Boothroyd spoke of his ability very highly indeed. Ben Foster was an imposing figure for Watford and was instrumental in their promotion to the Premier League with his solid performances and long goal-kicks which initiated many attacks.
Ben Foster spent a second (06/07) season with Watford, after Manchester United signed second string goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak from West Bromich Albion, and made 33 further appearances for the side before being recalled to Manchester United in the summer of 2007. Prior to his return to United he made his England international debut in a friendly against Spain on 07 February 2007, Spain won the match 1-0. Much of Ben Foster's 07/08 season was spent on the sidelines as he underwent surgery on a cruciate ligament, he returned to reserve team action on 06 March 2008. Ben Foster's first team debut for Manchester United came less than two weeks later on 15 March 2008 in a Premier League match against Derby County. Injury to Edwin van der Sar and a suspension to Tomasz Kuszczak left the door open for Ben Foster to make his first appearance for the senior team, he kept a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory. The following 08/09 season saw Ben Foster retain his position as Manchester United's third choice keeper in between his stints of being sidelined due to injury. In order to further his career and play more regular first team football Ben Foster realised he would have to leave Manchester United and that's what he did on 19 May 2010 when he signed a three year deal with Premier league side Birmingham City.
