Manchester United player profile - Jonny Evans

Jonathan Grant "Jonny" Evans, more widely known as Jonny Evans Manchester United and Northern Ireland defensive footballer, was born on 02 January 1988 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Jonny Evans grew up in Belfast where he attended Belfast High School and played for youth side Greenisland FC. It was whilst playing for Greenisland that he was spotted by a Manchester United scout and, in 2004 as a sixteen year old, Jonny Evans joined the Manchester United football academy. He progressed through the academy and in 2006 was sent out on loan initially to Belgian side Royal Antwerp, where he made 14 appearances and scored 2 goals at the start of the 06/07 season. It was during this time on loan to Royal Antwerp that Jonny Evans made his international debut with Northern Ireland, in a 3-2 win over Spain in September 2006.

Jonny Evans returned to English football in December 2006 and was immediately loaned to Championship side Sunderland where he remained until the end of the 06/07 season. He helped the club win the Football League Championship and with it promotion to the Premier League. Jonny Evans returned to Manchester United in the summer of 2007 and made his first team debut in a 2-0 League Cup defeat to Coventry City. Just over a month later on 07 November 2007 Jonny Evans made his UEFA Champions League debut coming on as a late substitute against Dynamo Kiev, he started his first UEFA Champions League match in December against Roma.

Jonny Evans began 2008 with a second spell on loan to, now Premier League club, Sunderland where he stayed until the end of the 07/08 season. The following 08/09 season saw Jonny Evans back at Manchester United where suspension to Nemanja Vidic gave him the opportunity to make his Premier League debut against Chelsea on 21 September 2008. Two months later in December 2008 Jonny Evans won his first medal with Manchester United with two appearances in the Fifa club World Cup in Japan. He played in the final of the Fifa club World Cup where United defeated Liga de Quinto 1-0 to win the tournament.
