25/04/10 - Rooney wins 2010 PFA Player of the Year award

The Professional Footballer's Association have voted Wayne Rooney 2010 Player of the year, the 24 year old Manchester United and England striker won the acolade ahead of the likes of Didier Drogba, Carlos Tevez and Cesc Fabregas.  Rooney who has scored 34 goals for United this season said "It's a great feeling to win because it's voted for by the players. It's a great honour and I'm really proud".

24/04/10 - Rooney expected to miss the rest of the season

Wayne Rooney looks likely to miss the remainder of the Premier League season after injuring his groin in training.  The injury comes just as he has recovered from the ankle injury which flared up during each of Manchester United's quarter-final losses to Bayern Munich.  Although the injury will probably finish his Premier League season he is expected to be fit and ready for England's World Cup Finals campaign this summer.

08/04/10 - Ferguson undaunted by Rooney relapse

Wayne Rooney's surprise inclusion in Manchester United's starting line-up for the Champions League quarter final second leg last night ended in the second half with a reoccurrence of the injury he first suffered one week ago.  Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said the injury is a soft tissue injury and broken blood vessel and he is not concerned as the player should be available again next week.

01/04/10 - Rooney injury is 'minor' damage

The results of the scan on Wayne Rooney's right ankle have shown that the injury suffered against Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening is nothing more than 'minor' ligament damage.  The England striker is expected to be out of action for around three weeks so, barring any further injuries, he will be fit to travel to South Africa for the World Cup Finals.  Full details of the injury and rehabilitation are expected to be given by Sir Alex Ferguson tomorrow at his press conference ahead of United's clash against Chelsea on Saturday.  The statement confirming Rooney's injury that appeared on the Manchester United website read: "Manchester United have confirmed the extent of Wayne Rooney’s injury, sustained in Tuesday night’s match against Bayern Munich.  A spokesperson told ManUtd.com, “We’re pleased to report that Wayne has not suffered a fracture. The scan revealed only minor ligament damage.”  For now, the club is not commenting on how many games Wayne is likely to miss. However, Sir Alex Ferguson will say more about the matter in his regular press conference at Carrington on Friday morning (09:30 BST).

 26/03/10 - Giggs hints about return to international football

Manchester United's Ryan Giggs caused a stir when a newspaper interview with him suggested that he would return to international football should Welsh manager John Toshack call upon his services.  However as the reports began to gain momentum Giggs stepped in to play down his comments telling BBC Radio Manchester: "I've got no immediate plans on coming back and playing regularly", adding "I just said I wouldn't rule it out. If there was ever an emergency or a game that they needed me I would obviously think about it".

26/03/10 - Nani rewarded with new contract deal

Manchester United's Portuguese winger Nani has been rewarded for his current form with a new four year contract, this despite still having two years to run on his existing contract.  Manager Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's website the 23 year old is "an emerging talent and has developed tremendously since joining the club".

19/03/10 - Hargreaves makes his long-awaited return

Manchester United's and England midfielder Owen Hargreaves made his long-awaited comeback last night in a reserve team match against Burnley after a year and a half on the sideline with tendinitis.  Hargreaves managed to play 45 minutes of the match, albeit cautiously, and will now be looking to work his way back into the first team as soon as possible.  Manchester United also look like welcoming back Ryan Giggs from injury for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool.  Today’s Champions League draw saw Manchester United pitched against Bayern Munich in the Quarter-Finals and should they be successful they will go on to play either Lyon or Bordeaux in the semi-final.  In the Europa League Liverpool drew Benfica in the Quarter-Finals and should they progress they will face either Valencia or Atletico Madrid in the semi-final.

25/02/10 - Anderson out for the rest of the season

Manchester United's Brazilian midfielder Anderson will be out for the rest of the season after rupturing a cruciate ligament during Tuesday's 3-0 win over West Ham United.  The Brazilian midfielder will now also miss out on his countries 2010 World Cup finals campaign this summer.

25/02/10 - Ferdinand ruled out of Cup Final

Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand will not feature in the Carling Cup Final against Aston Villa this Sunday, the defender has a back injury which will also rule him out of England's friendly against Egypt next Wednesday.

19/02/10 - Ferguson thinks another year will not be a problem for Scholes

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping Paul Scholes will extend his contract with the club when it comes to an end this June.  The 35 year old scored at the San Siro in United's 3-2 first leg Champions League win over AC Milan after which Ferguson said "He is showing on the field what he is capable of and another year would not be a problem for the lad," he said.

11/02/10 - Unlucky break for Giggs

Ryan Giggs is likely to be out of action for for four weeks after fracturing his right arm in Wednesday's 1-1 draw at Aston Villa. The Manchester United winger sustained the injury in a collision with Villa's Steve Sidwell during the second half. Giggs will now sit out United's Champions League match against AC Milan next week and the Carling Cup final at the end of February.

09/02/10 - Ferdinand calls it off

Rio Ferdinand has decided to drop his appeal against the Football Association's extra one-match ban, received for making a "frivolous" previous appeal. The England captain initially received a three-match ban following a clash with Hull's Craig Fagan in January, this was extended to four matches after he appealed against the ban. The 31 year old defender who has already missed two matches will not now be available until the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa on 28 February.

08/02/10 - No Celebration for Becks

David Beckham says he will not celebrate should he score against his old club Manchester United when they meet AC Milan in the Champions League next week. It will be the first time Beckham has played against his former club since leaving in 2003. Beckham told Inside United magazine: "I do not think I would celebrate. I respect the supporters and the club. To me they are the best fans in the world and the support they gave me week in, week out was incredible. Nothing will ever better that."

29/12/09 - Van der Sar returns to training

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar returned to training on Monday from indefinite compassionate leave granted as a result of his wife suffering a brain haemorrhage. The 39-year-old has not played since suffering a knee injury in Manchester United's 3-0 Premier League win over Everton on 21 November.

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic tweaked a nerve in his leg during the warm-up for United's FA Cup clash with Leeds United which looks like sidelining him for up to 10 days.

02/12/09 - Macheda set to remain at United until 2014

Manchester United striker Federico Macheda has signed a new 4 year contract with the club which will see him remain at the Premier League champions until June 2014. The 18 year old Italian has not yet played in the Premier League this season however he has scored twice in ten appearances in other competitions. Macheda said of the new deal "I am very happy to commit my future to Manchester United, I really enjoyed myself last season when I came on and I hope to get more chances like that and contribute to the team's success".

28/10/09 - Neville sending off was justified says Ferguson

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson agreed with referee Chris Hoy's sending off of Gary Neville during United's 2-0 Carling Cup win over Barnsley, the 67 year old said "Gary did follow through with the tackle and caught the player, it was not high, just above the ankle, but in the present climate I would say that the referee was probably correct".

27/10/09 - Ferguson admits improper conduct charge

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted a charge of improper conduct following remarks he made about the fitness of Premier League referee Alan Wiley. The comments came during a post-match interview on 03 October after United's 2-2 draw with Sunderland, it is widely expected that Ferguson will receive a touchline ban as punishment.

12/10/09 - head of referees wants Ferguson ban

Alan Leighton the head of the referees union has called for Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to be handed a severe ban following his comments about Alan Wiley's fitness. Ferguson's comments came after United's 2-2 draw with Sunderland, Leighton told BBC Radio 5 live the apology was "half-hearted" and said "A punishment should be a Uefa-type coaching ban, which is more than a touchline ban, a Uefa ban involves a ban for a greater period of time during, before and after a game".

06/10/09 - Van der Sar back in action

Manchester United keeper Edwin Van der Sar played a full 90 minutes this evening in a reserve match against Everton, the Dutchman has been out injured since 05 August when he broke two bones in his left hand in the Audi Cup match against Bayern Munich.

03/10/09 - Sir Alex Ferguson questions referees fitness

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson questioned referee Alan Wiley's fitness following his sides 2-2 draw at home to Sunderland. Ferguson said after the match "The pace of the game demanded a referee who was fit. He was not fit" adding "You see referees abroad who are as fit as butcher's dogs. He was taking 30 seconds to book a player. He was needing a rest. It was ridiculous".

The groin injury suffered by Manchester United striker Michael Owen during the Champions League tie against Wolfsburg this week is not as bad as first thought and he is expected to be available for the Premier League match against Bolton on 17th October.

30/09/09 - Owen could be out for three weeks

Manchester United striker Michael Owen was substituted after just 20 minutes of the club's Champions League tie against German club Wolfsburg this evening as a result of a groin injury. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said Owen had felt a tightness in his groin earlier in the week during training but felt fine going into the match. The injury is expected to sideline him for two or three weeks.

23/09/09 - United legend to take on role of international coach

Manchester United's legendary former captain Bryan Robson has agreed a four year contract to coach Thailand's national squad with the intention being for him to take the squad to the Asian Cup, the Olympics and the World Cup. Robson will take over from another former England international Peter Reid.

10/08/09 - Ben Foster ruled out of England's friendly against the Netherlands

Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster picked up a knock during Sunday's Community Shield loss to Chelsea which has ruled him out of inclusion in the squad for Engalnd's friendly against the Netherlands on Wednesday, Joe Hart of Manchester City will now replace Foster.

09/08/09 - Nani is Ferguson's latest injury blow

Manchester United have suffered a succession of injuries to players in the lead up to the new Premier League season with Portuguese winger Nani the latest to join Sir Alex Ferguson's list of unavailable players. Nani suffered a dislocated shoulder two thirds of the way through Manchester United's Community Shield loss to Chelsea today when he fell awkwardly after a John Terry tackle.

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has suffered a calf injury which looks likely to rule him out for the start of the season. The 27 year old Serb could be out for two weeks which will see him miss the matches against Birmingham and Burnley.

05/08/09 - Van der Sar to miss the first two months of the season

Manchester United's first choice goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar has undergone surgery on a broken finger and left hand injury sustained during last week's penalty shoot-out loss to Bayern Munich. The injury is expected to keep the Dutchman out of action for anything upto 2 months, leaving the door open for England keeper Ben Foster to stake his claim for the regular goalkeeping position.

29/07/09 - Omission from tournament raises doubts over Hargreaves return

Manchester United's Owen Hargreaves is not part of the squad now in Munich for the Audi Cup tournament. It was hoped he would travel to Germany with United to begin his comeback from injury however the England midfielder is currently in the USA were he is receiving treatment from a renowned surgeoon as part of his rehabilitation from 2 major knee operations in the past year.

24/07/09 - Gary Neville hit by another injury

Manchester United's Gary Neville has returned home with half of the team's tour of Asia still remaining. The defender who has been injury prone in recent times is beleived to have suffered a groin strain during the first part of the tour however it was described by the club spokesperson as being a 'minor' injury.

17/07/09 - terrorist blast at Man Utd hotel

Manchester United's tour of Asia has been disrupted by terrorist bomb blasts at the hotel where they were due to stay in Indonesia. Having arrived in Malaysia for the start of their 4 match tour the news came through of the attacks at Jakarta's Ritz-Carlton hotel where the team were due to check in on Monday. The club cancelled the Indonesia leg of their tour and issued the following statement: "Following the explosions in Jakarta - one of which was at the hotel the team were due to stay in - and based on advice received, the directors have informed the Indonesian FA that the club cannot fulfil the fixture in Jakarta on the 2009 Asia tour".

03/07/09 - surprise new signing for Manchester United looks set to be Michael Owen

It is widely expected that former Newcastle United and England striker Michael Owen will shortly sign for Manchester United on a free contract. The 29 year old, who became a free agent at the end of June, was at Manchester United's training ground earlier today and is now believed to be undergoing a stringent medical test prior to confirmation of his move. The club have made no comment on the matter so far.

30/06/09 - Antonio Valencia becomes first signing of the summer for Manchester United

Manchester United have today signed winger Antonio Valencia from Wigan Athletic and although the fee was undisclosed reports suggest it was in the region of £16 million. The Premier League champions manager Sir Alex Ferguson said Antonio is a player we have admired for some time now, having spent the last two years in the Premier League with Wigan," and added "I am sure his pace and ability will make a significant contribution to the team,".

11/06/09 - Manchester United accept world record £80 million bid for Cristiano Ronaldo 

Manchester United have received a world-record, unconditional offer of £80million for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid. At Cristiano's request - who has again expressed his desire to leave - and after discussion with the player's representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player. 07/06/09 - Hull City agree deal with Manchester United for striker Fraizer Campbell

Manchester United have reportedly agreed to sell striker Fraizer Campbell to Hull City for a fee of around £6 million. The move follows a loan spell which Campbell spent at the club during the 2007/08 season when he scored 15 goals for the club.

Manchester United have signed a new four year shirt sponsorship deal with Chicago-based insurance giant Aon corporation. The new sponsors name will appear on the Manchester United shirts at the beginning of the 2010/11 season when the existing deal with US insurer AIG comes to an end.

27/05/09 - Manchester United may cough up £25.5 million to secure Tevez

Manchester United chief executive David Gill says the club have not ruled out paying the £25.5 million valuation set by agent Kia Joorabchian to secure the future of forward Carlos Tevez. The existing loan deal for Tevez runs out at the end of June and although Gill thinks the price tag put on him is expensive and 'toppy' he has left the door open by saying "that's not to say we won't pay that".

14/05/09 - Tevez uncertainty creates a war of words

Manchester United's unsettled striker Carlos Tevez has been the centre of a war of words between manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Tevez's advisor Kia Joorabchian. Ferguson said a deal had been put on the table for the striker, whose loan period expires this summer, however, Joorabchian said although a meeting had taken place with chief executive David Gill "it is categorically untrue Manchester United made an offer to try to persuade Carlos to stay". Joorabchian holds Tevez's registration, a point Sir Alex seemed to make reference to when he said "the problem is we are not negotiating with a football club".

13/05/09 - Champions League win rewarded with city parade

Manchester United will be honoured with a homecoming parade the day after the Champions League final if they are successfully crowned champions. The decision to hold a parade is in contrast to last year when no parade was held because police feared "risks to public safety" in the wake of riots involving Rangers fans in the city earlier in the month.

07/05/09 - Fletcher handed a glimmer of hope

Manchester United's Darren Fletcher has been handed a glimmer of hope that his Champions League final suspension may be overturned after Uefa general secretary David Taylor told manager Sir Alex Ferguson that they could challenge the decision. Fletcher was dismissed following a challenge on Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, however, tv replays showed he had made contact with the ball. Uefa rules differ from those of the Premier League whereby red cards cannot be overturned except in the case of mistaken identity, however, Taylor told the BBC World Service "they'd see if there were circumstances to justify a departure from procedure".

06/05/09 - Fletcher to miss out on Champions League final

Manchester United's Darren Fletcher will miss out on the Champions League final at the end of May as a result of the red card he was shown during last night's semi fianl against Arsenal. Television replays showed that Fletcher had made contact with the ball before the player (Cesc Fabregas) however UEFA have stated that the decision will stand unless the Italian referee (Roberto Rosetti) reports a case of mistaken identity which led to the wrong player being dismissed.

27/04/09 - Rafael signs contract extension

Manchester United defender Rafael has signed a two year extension to his existing contract which should see him remain at the club until 2013. The 18 year old Brazilian joined Manchester United from Fluminense along with his twin brother Fabio. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's official website "everyone at the club has been very impressed and excited by his first year as a professional," adding "his enthusiasm and the adventurous way he plays is typical of a Manchester United player".

26/04/09 - Giggs finally voted PFA Player of the Year

Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs has won the PFA Player of the Year award for the first time in his long and glittering career. Giggs came out on top of the other five short-listed players Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo, Edwin van der Sar and Liverpool's Steven Gerrard.

23/04/09 - Neville and O'Shea out for a few weeks

Manchester United defenders Gary Neville and John O'Shea both picked up injuries in last nights Premier League win over Portsmouth. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said "they are both looking at being out for weeks, because of two pretty bad tackles on them" he added "we've had a bad time at right-back but Wes Brown is coming back".

22/04/09 - Carlos Tevez hints at leaving Old Trafford

Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez has spoken openly for the first time about his uncertain future at the club. The 24 year old Argentine's loan deal ends in May and the Premier League side are yet to offer him a permanent deal. Tevez told an Argentine radio station he thought his time with United was coming to an end, adding "as a player I can't permit myself to play one game, but not another and also, the World Cup is coming up. I see it very difficult to stay with Manchester United. That's the reality. You can score three or four goals and not play in the next game. It gets to your head. I need to play".
