 28/12/08 - Newcastle United owner  takes the Magpies off of the market

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley announced yesterday that the club was no longer for sale saying he is now "committing to the club as its owner". He put the Premier League club up for sale in September following a backlash from fans upset at the exit of the then boss Kevin Keegan.

16/12/08 - New contract offer to Michael Owen

Newcastle United striker Michael Owen has been offered a contract by the club in order to extend his stay with them beyond next summer. The 29 year old's current contract runs out at the end of this season at which time he will become a free agent and could leave the club without them recouping any of the £17million they paid Real Madrid for him back in 2005.

28/11/08 - Kinnear signs deal to stay at Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear has signed a contract which will see him remain at the club until the end of the season as owner Mike Ashley continues to try to sell the club. Kinnear said "ever since I came to Newcastle, I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience", adding that he will have money to spend in the January transfer window and will have the final say on the players that come in.

 17/11/08 - Barton sidelined for up to eight weeks

Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton is expected to be out for as long as two months after suffering damage to his knee ligaments during the 2-2 draw with Wigan on Saturday. The injury came from a challenge with Lee Catermole after 17 minutes of the match and just adds to the list of problems Barton has faced since joining Newcastle United, many of which have been self inflicted.

24/10/08 - Kinnear extends contract

Newcastle United interim manager Joe Kinnear will sign an extension to his short term contract with the Magpies, his original term was due to run out after Tuesday's match against West Brom, but, he will now remain with the club for a further month whilst talks about the sale of the club continue.

23/10/08 - Beye red card appeal is successful

Newcastle United have been successful in their appeal against the red card shown to Habib Beye during their 2-2 home draw against Manchester City. The Senegalese defender was shown the red card by referee Rob Styles for fouling Robinho in the penalty area but television replays showed that he won the ball and the football association upheld his claim for wrongful dismissal.

 21/10/08 - Magpies to appeal Beye sending off

Newcastle United will appeal against the dismissal of Habib Beye last night during their 2-2 home draw against Manchester City. The Senegalese defender was shown the red card by referee Rob Styles for apparently fouling Brazilian Robinho in the penalty area, however,television replays showed that he appeared to win the ball. Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear said: "It was hard to call, but like all of us, referees make mistakes. Thankfully TV shows he got the ball", he added, "he is such an honest kid, the lad who made the tackle. He said to me, 'Gaffer, I swear to God, I got the ball first'.

17/10/08 - Michael Owen suffers injury in training

Newcastle United striker Michael Owen has suffered a groin strain in training which will see him miss Monday evening's home match against Manchester City although manager Joe Kinnear is hopeful that he'll be back for the local derby against Sunderland on 25th October.

Newcastle United have surprised everyone by naming former Wimbledon and Luton manager Joe Kinnear as their new manager for the interim until the end of October.

26/09/08 - one game at a time no good for Venables

Terry Venables has turned down the position of caretaker manager at Premier League side Newcastle United. It's reported that the deal offered was on a game by game basis however Venables felt this created "too much uncertainty" preferring a fixed period contract.

25/09/08 - El Tel of a job

it's being widely reported that Terry Venables could well be the next manager of Newcastle United, according to the BBC website "Venables met with director of football Dennis Wise and vice-president Tony Jiminez on Wednesday evening", it also reports "Newcastle hope to make an announcement before the weekend".

04/09/08 - King Kev abdicates!

Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan has resigned after only eight months in the position, the shock announcement followed days of speculation and lengthy talks between Keegan and the Newcastle United board. The 57 year old Keegan said "I've been working desperately hard to find a way forward with the directors, but sadly that has not proved possible," he also added "It's my opinion that a manager must have the right to manage and that clubs should not impose upon any manager any player that he does not want".

20/05/08 - Newcastle United midfielder out for six months

Newcastle United's fiery midfielder Joey Barton was today convicted of assault and sentenced to six months in prison. The sentence was passed on Barton in relation to incidents that occured on 27th December 2008 after a night of drinking in Liverpool. Newcastle United issued a brief statement to say they acknowledge the verdict and are considering the verdict.

30/04/08 - not yet a Dunne deal!

Manchester City's Richard Dunne is the latest player to be linked with a possible summer move to Newcastle United. The speculative story has come from reports in both the Northern Echo and Daily Mail newsapapers although there is no official confirmation of interest in the player from Toon manager Kevin Keegan.
