Manchester sweatshirt Manchester University Manchester University's foundations date back to the first half of the 19th Century with the creation of the Mechanics' Institute (later named the Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) to teach workers the basic principles of science. Later in 1851 the Owens College was built, from bequest moneys left by a local merchant, the college became a constituent of the federal Victoria University and was granted a Royal Charter in 1880 and Manchester University was established. Manchester University was England's first civic university, it was renamed the Victoria University of Manchester in 1903 and in 1904 the Victoria University of Manchester absorbed Owens College. One hundred years later in 2004 the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and the Victoria University of Manchester were formally merged into the single University of Manchester. Today the University of Manchester has approximately 40,000 students, studying 500 academic programmes, and 10,000 staff. The University of Manchester is the largest single campus University in England and more students apply for entry to the University of Manchester than any other university in the country, with more than 60,000 applications for undergraduate courses alone.
